Abdul-Qadir, Zaynab H.2026-04-132026-04-132018https://repository.iou.edu.gm/handle/123456789/404The study examined the attitude of Muslim parents to Islamic way of child upbringing in Yola, Adamawa State, Nigeria. Two local governments were purposively selected for the study, Yola North and Yola South of Adamawa State ( popularly known as Jimeta-Yola), because of their high Muslim population and a total of 200 questionnaires were administered across the 3 districts within the local governments under survey amongst respondents aged 20 and above, with a 75% response rate. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis were employed as analytical tools. The results revealed that about 34.7% have 3-5 children per family while 16% have household size greater than 12. Majority (66%) of the male respondents have a single wife and 15% have more than two wives. The respondents are mostly (26.7%) civil servant, 15.3% are into farming, 8% artisans and 27.3% are into various other occupations apart from trading. Likewise, most of them, 63.3%, earned an average income of less than =N=40,000 and only 15.3% earned above =N=80,000. In terms of attitudes of Muslims parents to child upbringing, spiritual upbringing was ranked 1st with weighted mean score of 7.05, then the moral upbringing, child protection and financial commitments were ranked 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively. Physical and health education ranked last. Likewise, the perception that children of educated parents get best education ranked first, while skill acquisition by Muslim children compared to their non-Muslim counterparts was ranked last. The results of the multiple regression analysis indicated that the respondents’ average monthly income and the number of wives of the respondents significantly affect their parental attitude to child upbringing. They are both negatively related to child upbringing at 10% significant level. The study therefore recommended that the responsibility of provision enjoined upon the father as stipulated in the Qur’an should be taken with all sense of seriousness and marrying more than one wife should be tailored towards proper child upbringing and not the other way round.enAttitude of Parents to Islamic Way of Child Upbringing in Yola Adamawa State, NigeriaThesis
