Abstract

Background and Objectives: The Holy Quran serves primarily as a book of guidance, yet it also includes descriptions related to 'natural sciences' that were understood by early Muslim scholars within the scientific context of their time. With advances in modern science, several contemporary scholars have sought to reinterpret these verses, seeking to harmonize their meanings with established scientific knowledge. While traditionalists strongly criticize these efforts, accusing them of deviating from the original interpretations, modernists often blame the traditionalists for their rigidity. Despite the ongoing debate, no systematic research has been conducted to explore the extent of harmonization efforts over time or to investigate the gap between traditional and modern scholarly approaches. This study aims to evaluate the harmonization efforts of both traditionalist and modernist groups, comparing them with interpretations found in early Quranic exegeses (tafasir), which are considered the gold standard. Methods: All Quranic verses dealing with science were isolated. Interpretations of the selected verses on various topics by selected traditional and modern scholars from the post-modern era were noted. Interpretations by each scholar from the post-modern era were compared with the gold standard tafasir by early Muslim scholars. These interpretations were subjectively analyzed to assess the degree of overtime harmonization with science. Descriptive analyses were used to compare the results of traditional versus modern scholars from post-modern times. A critical, thematic, in-depth analysis was conducted to identify reasons for the differences in the results. Factors influencing scholarly approaches, such as the scholar’s social location and exposure to Western culture/scientific education, were evaluated. Results: Although a greater degree of harmonization was evident in interpretations by modern scholars, a certain degree of harmonization was also observed among traditional scholars of the post-modern era. The scholar’s social location, including their level of exposure to the West or science, was an important factor that influenced their approaches. Conclusion: Some degree of harmonization was observed across both traditional and modern scholars, though it was more pronounced among those exposed to Western sciences. A strong foundation in Islamic sciences is necessary to avoid making basic interpretive mistakes, but additional strong scientific knowledge may help scholars to better understand the verses related to science and answer the possible questions in the era of modern science.
