| dc.description.abstract | This thesis investigates the challenges faced by Muslim families living in Sweden, focusing on their experiences of navigating life in a multicultural yet predominantly secular society. By exploring the intersection of cultural identity, religious practice, and societal integration, the research highlights how structural and interpersonal barriers impact their daily lives. By means of collecting answers from a sample of Muslims families, this work aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the unique struggles and strategies employed by those families in Sweden. The study was motivated by the growing need to understand the realities of Muslim families in Europe, where debates surrounding immigration, multiculturalism, and integration often marginalize minority voices. This research seeks to address questions like What challenges does a Muslim family in Sweden encounter? How do they balance maintaining their cultural and religious identity while adapting to Swedish societal norms? What strategies do they employ to overcome those challenges, and what do these strategies reveal about the broader dynamics of integration? A quantitative and qualitative methodology was employed to answer these questions. The research involved interviews and participant observation with selected Muslim families living in Sweden. This approach allowed for an intimate exploration of their lived experiences across various domains, including social interactions, religious practices, education, and employment. Data were analysed thematically to identify recurring patterns and themes, revealing both the obstacles they face and their resilience in overcoming them. The findings reveal that Muslim families encounter challenges such as Islamophobia, cultural misunderstandings, and difficulties in practicing their religion within a secular framework. Social exclusion, stereotyping, and limited access to culturally sensitive services were prominent issues. Despite these barriers, the families demonstrate remarkable resilience, utilizing strategies such as building strong community networks, educating others about their faith, and fostering adaptability in balancing tradition with societal expectations. Intergenerational dynamics also emerge as a critical factor, with younger members often grappling with identity conflicts as they navigate cultural duality. This research is significant as it provides an in-depth look at the lived experiences of Muslim families, contributing to the discourse on multiculturalism and integration. By amplifying the voices of Muslim families, it challenges stereotypes and promotes a more inclusive understanding of minority experiences. The findings have practical implications for policymakers, educators, and community leaders, underscoring the importance of fostering inclusivity and cultural sensitivity to ensure equitable opportunities for all members of society. | |
