History And Impact Of Liberal Islam In Indonesia

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the most prominent Muslim countries in terms of population. Throughout Indonesia's history, various Islamic thoughts have developed locally or from the influence of the Muslim world. One of the growing thoughts that cause issues in Indonesia’s Muslim society is Islamic Liberalism. The growth of Islamic Liberalism has become a catalyst in the division in many aspects of Muslim lives in Indonesia. The development of Islamic Liberalism has raised various questions, e.g., what causes the seed of liberalism to grow in Indonesia? How were they formed? What are the influences of Islamic Liberalism upon the Muslim ummah? How does the Ummah respond to Islamic Liberalism? This paper attempts to trace the origin of liberalism in Indonesia and how they develop throughout its history of Indonesia through the works of literary analysis. The researcher believes that tracing back their beginning, how they organize, and uncovering how they spread the ideology in various organizations in Indonesia will shed light on the way to counteract their dangerous ideology. The outcome of this research is to shed light on the relationship between the Nahdhatul Ulamā and Muhammadiyah organization of Indonesia against Liberal Islam and the prominent figures who supported and helped liberalism to spread among Indonesian Muslim society and discuss its development historically.
