This study investigates the effectiveness of Islamic practices among the youth in Chennai, India, exploring various factors that influence their understanding and adherence to Islam. Encompassing socio-economic strata, generational differences, and familial dynamics, the research focuses on the youth aged 18-26 years, delving into obstacles faced across these subsets. Through extensive analysis, the study reveals a consistent pattern where distractions like social media and television consistently rank as the primary obstacle across all surveyed subsets. It critically examines the necessity of social media while offering recommendations to mitigate its adverse effects. Additionally, peer pressure to enjoy life emerges as the second most prevalent obstacle, prompting discussions on societal norms and cultural influences on the youth, alongside recommendations on resisting undue influence. An intriguing finding underscores that the percentage of Islamic practices is notably lower among the subset of youth with only a practising mother. The study emphasises the crucial role of fathers in Islam, addressing steps to counteract societal negativity associated with this particular subset. Furthermore, it acknowledges concerns expressed by participants about obstacles such as lack of encouragement from family members, fear of judgement from practising Muslims, misconceptions about Islam, and perceived financial constraints. Notably, the study identifies a disparity between the theoretical knowledge and practical application of Islamic practices, particularly evident in the upper class. Despite acquiring substantial theoretical knowledge, this subset falls short in translating it into practical actions. The research emphasises solutions for empowering youth to overcome these obstacles, providing guidance on adhering to Islamic teachings. Addressing the evils of social media and peer pressure, the study suggests strategies for community leaders, mosques, parents, educators, and individuals to navigate and surmount these challenges. The Islamic way of life, encompassing virtues such as seeking knowledge, associating with pious individuals, practising self-restriction, fostering modesty, maintaining consistent vigilance, adhering to a proper routine, and avoiding intermingling, serves as a comprehensive guide to improve various aspects of life. Ultimately, the study underscores the ultimate goal of Jannah for Muslims and encourages shaping oneself during youth, a stage believed to be pivotal in establishing lifelong practices aligned with Islamic principles.
