Theological Interpretations Of Verses In Surah Al-Zummar Relating To Tawheed

Abstract

This thesis examines the concept of Tawheed (Islamic Monotheism) through the lens of Surah Al-Zumar, highlighting its centrality in Islamic theology and its role in establishing the foundation of faith. The research seeks to answer key questions, such as: What is the meaning and significance of Tawheed? How does Surah Al-Zumar elucidate its principles? What constitutes a correct understanding of the Surah’s verses relating to Tawheed according to the Salaf (pious predecessors)? To address these areas of focus, the study employs a systematic exegesis of the Surah, grounded in classical Islamic scholarship, particularly the interpretations of the Salaf. It also critiques common misinterpretations of the Surah’s verses and analyses the arguments and refutations provided by scholarly works to correct these misunderstandings. The findings reveal the profound theological implications of Surah Al-Zumar in establishing a clear, unified understanding of Tawheed and its practical applications in faith and worship. The study underscores the superiority of the Salafi (orthodox) interpretative approach in preserving the authentic message of Tawheed compared to other deviant methodologies and misinterpretations of the Surah. This research is significant as it not only clarifies the correct comprehension of Tawheed but also contributes to contemporary discourse on Quranic exegesis by addressing theological disputes associated to the Surah and reinforcing the importance of a unified understanding of Tawheed and Islamic theology.
