Measuring the Competitiveness Factors in Telecommunication Markets
(Competitiveness in emerging markets, 2018) Rahman, S.; Nekmahmud, Md.
The telecommunication sector has emerged as one of the fastest-growing technology markets in the world. This chapter examines the competitiveness of key factors in telecommunication markets, with a particular focus on service quality and customer satisfaction. The study is primarily descriptive in nature and is based on a combination of primary and secondary data. It proposes an approach for developing a conceptual framework that integrates service quality, competitive factors, customer satisfaction, and customer loyalty within telecommunication markets. The constructed model and hypothesis development identify six independent competitive factors. Among these, value-added services (VAS), price and tariff, convenience, and customer care are found to have a positive and significant influence on customer satisfaction. In contrast, communication and coverage, as well as sales promotion, are found to have a negative influence on customer satisfaction in telecommunication markets. The chapter further emphasizes emerging telecommunication markets, highlighting seven key features that arise from ongoing changes: technological advancements, government laws and regulations, value-added services, social media demand, sales promotion strategies, user behavior, and market competition. A summary of the main findings is presented, along with managerial implications and practical recommendations for telecommunication markets. The chapter provides useful insights for researchers to develop new perspectives and for service providers to enhance customer retention based on the study’s findings.

Auditing and Sustainability Accounting: A global examination using the Scopus database
    (Sustainability, 2022) Thottoli, M.M.; Islam, M.A.; Sobhani, F.A.; Rahman, S.; Hassan, M.S.
Purpose: Sustainability accounting measures performance toward sustainability and ensures accountability in the provision of conventional accounting information. A compliance audit involves a comprehensive examination of an organization’s adherence to regulatory requirements. Compliance audit reports evaluate the effectiveness and rigor of regulatory compliance measures, security guidelines, risk management processes, and internal control systems within the context of both compliance auditing and sustainability accounting. Auditing plays a critical role in ensuring that financial information-related standards and conventions are properly followed. Accordingly, this study aims to explore the conceptual structure of auditing and sustainability accounting through a bibliometric analysis, with the objective of enhancing understanding in this field. Design/methodology/approach: This study employs bibliometric analysis to examine research on compliance audits published between 2000 and 2021. The sample consists of 330 research articles retrieved from the Scopus database, limited to articles and review papers within the business domain. The study also assesses the applicability of Bradford’s law and Lotka’s law. Findings: The bibliometric analysis reveals key trends in auditing and sustainability accounting research, indicating that compliance auditing remains an emerging field that continues to face challenges in gaining prominence within mainstream accounting and auditing research. The concentration of highly cited articles among a limited number of authors further suggests that the field remains relatively specialized. However, there has been a notable increase in the number of publications between 2009 and 2021. The study also identifies leading Scopus-indexed journals, influential authors, and collaboration networks. Based on the literature, several research gaps are highlighted, along with directions for future studies. Research limitations/implications: The analysis is limited to data sourced exclusively from the Scopus database, which may introduce certain limitations and potential biases in the findings. Originality/value: This study contributes to the literature by examining recent developments in compliance auditing and sustainability accounting, identifying existing research gaps, and proposing avenues for future research in this evolving field.

The Effects of Liquidity Risk and Interest-Rate Risk on Profitability and Firm Value among Banks in ASEAN-5 Countries
(Journal of Reviews on Global Economics, 2019) Ebenezer, O.; Islam, M.A.; Yusoff, W.; Rahman, S.
This study explores the issues relating to liquidity risk and interest-rate risk, recognizing that existing studies are mostly vague in emerging and developing markets. A panel data estimation technique is employed based on data extracted from 63 commercial banks in ASEAN-5 countries over the period 2009 to 2017, yielding 567 observations. The empirical results reveal that the loan-to-deposit ratio has a positive and significant effect on firm value, while the liquid asset ratio and interest-rate risk (net interest margin and asset interest yield) have a negative and significant effect on firm value in ASEAN. The loan-to-deposit ratio also has a positive and significant impact on return on assets, whereas interest-rate risk and bank size have a significant negative effect on return on assets for ASEAN banks, while GDP and inflation have a positive and significant effect on return on assets. In addition, liquidity risk has a negative and significant effect on return on equity, while interest-rate risk has a positive and significant effect; bank size has a significant negative effect on return on equity, while the inflation rate has a positive and significant impact on return on equity. Hence, this empirical study provides implications emphasizing the need for banks to adhere to prudential and regulatory guidelines and to ensure effective corporate management with respect to liquidity exposure, which is capable of critically affecting banks’ profitability and firm value. The dynamics of interest rate volatility in the banking operating environment necessitate that financial institutions adopt sound risk management practices in order to obtain higher valuations, achieve better financial performance, and experience diminished costs of financial distress. This is useful for policy implementation in ASEAN economies and suggests that further studies can explore the interaction between abnormal loan growth and non-performing loans using a robust econometric model.
