Abstract

Islam is the fastest growing religion in the United States. Muslim communities are hard at work building masjids, Islamic schools, and other Islamic institutions. The Imam in the United States plays an important role in the life of the Muslim community; however, he faces many challenges in the performance of his duties. This study aims to explore what these challenges are and suggest ways to improve the situation of the Imam so that he may serve his congregation in the best way possible. This study is based on a quantitative survey of Imams serving communities in the United States. The traditional role of the Imam in many Muslim majority countries is to lead the five daily prayers and give the Friday sermon. In the United States; however, he is called upon to perform many other tasks. He is asked to provide counseling for newlyweds and help families with mediation and arbitration. He has to deal with members of the community who have mental health issues, he must be able to interact well with the youth and women, he is expected to represent the community when dealing with law enforcement agencies and clergy members from other faith traditions. He is expected to visit Muslims who are incarcerated and help them practice their religion behind bars. All of these extra duties take a toll on the Imam. It is necessary that he be trained in these non-traditional roles he takes on. The creation of an association of Imams is highly recommended at the end of this study. Its purpose will be to serve and support Imams in their various duties and provide avenues to improve their skills in serving the Muslim Community in the United States.
