Abstract
The usage of social media by many Muslims today is contradictory to the ethical standards of Islam. This paper identifies the reasons why Islamic ethical standards are not maintained by Muslims while using social media. It also discusses the relationship between social media and youth. It is concluded that the Islamic way of upbringing, knowledge of the religion, and participation in Islamic activities are some of the factors that affect ethical behaviour. This paper also lays out the positive and negative effects of using social media and the scholars’ view of social media. This paper has explained that morality is something that is ingrained in the human soul and is in turn reflected in the behaviour of the person as well as in his or her interaction with others in the society. Suggestions and recommendations are also put forward to ensure ethical and effective use of social media for the comprehensive benefit of humanity. If every individual abides by the prescribed principles of ethics, people will lead a peaceful life with no cases of crime.
