Abstract
While many marvel at the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into mobile devices and daily life, others are deeply concerned about the devastating consequences of AI-driven technologies, such as autonomous weapon systems like "The Gospel." AI is rapidly reshaping our world in ways that present both remarkable opportunities and profound ethical challenges. This thesis explores the ethical and Islamic implications of AI from the perspective of a Muslim student of Islamic studies, seeking to bridge the gap between cutting-edge technology and the timeless ethical principles that govern the lives of millions of Muslims. At the heart of this research are several pressing questions: How do AI's capabilities and ethical dilemmas align with Islam's moral and legal frameworks? What are the potential benefits and risks of integrating AI into Islamic societies? How can the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah inform the responsible development and regulation of AI technologies? This study employed a mixed-method approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative research methods. A purposive sampling technique was used to select over 50 participants from the local Muslim community, including Islamic scholars, students, and general community members aged 20-60+ with varying backgrounds. Data collection involved surveys, semi-structured interviews, public dialogue sessions, and case studies examining the use of AI in sectors such as healthcare, finance, and governance. While AI holds immense potential for enhancing societal well-being, the study's findings highlight a significant lack of awareness about AI within the Muslim community, emphasizing the urgent need for education and dialogue on this issue. This thesis proposes a framework for the development of AI technologies that align with Islamic values and underscores the importance of collaboration between religious scholars, technologists, and policymakers to ensure that AI advancements are guided by the principles of justice, equity, and human dignity as emphasized in Islam.
